Reforestation

After a final harvest, it is imperative that the cut-over site is properly regenerated to help ensure the long-term timber growing and revenue producing potential of the property.  This can be accomplished in several ways, but the most prevalent method is to plant genetically improved seedlings on the cut-over site after the site has been properly prepared.  It is our job to coordinate all reforestation activities like those listed below.

  • Help secure cost-share assistance through Louisiana’s Forest Productivity Program (FPP) available to all non-industrial forest landowners with property in Louisiana.
  • Order the seedlings that best match the site to be reforested.
  • Contract and oversee reputable and qualified site preparation contractors to properly prepare the site for planting. These contractors may provide the application of herbicides to control unwanted vegetation and/or the burning of the site to help improve the quality of the planting job.
  • Contract and oversee the hand or mechanical planting of the seedlings by reputable and qualified contractors.
  • Conduct survival checks in the first year after planting to ensure that the reforestation effort has been successful.
  • Contract and oversee the spring application of herbicides to control the herbaceous species that compete with the seedling for the available moisture.
